Tired of having a cluttered wardrobe and feel like you have nothing to wear?

A capsule wardrobe is a functional wardrobe consisting of a small collection of clothes you love and wear on a regular basis. It allows you to mix and match to create many outfit combinations to span the entire year, or rotate them seasonally. You determine how big or small you want your capsule wardrobe to be.

Clean out your closet

Before you start building your capsule wardrobe, empty your closet entirely and spend a couple of hours going through your clothes. It’s easier to build a capsule wardrobe with a reduced amount of clothing.

Before you begin sorting your clothes, start thinking about the clothes that you would like to have in your capsule. Essentially, everything in your capsule should be the ones you love to wear and feel great in.

Categorise your clothes

Start by looking at what you own. Lay out all your clothes and consider when was the last time you had worn each item and start sorting them into the following piles:

Keep: The clothes you love and wear on a regular basis. These will go back into your wardrobe.

Store: The clothes you rarely wear because you may not really like them. Put these in a storage container, if they remain untouched for three to four months, it’s time to give them away.

Donate or sell: The clothes you never wear and you keep them because there is a sentimental value. You can either give them away or sell them.

Build your capsule wardrobe

Your capsule wardrobe needs to be functional and suit your unique lifestyle. The goal during this phase is to define your personal style and the number of clothes you will allow in your capsule wardrobe.

When curating your capsule wardrobe, think about your lifestyle, colour palette, accessories, and create a set of clothes that will work together. Once you have defined your style, it’s much easier to choose the clothes to include in your capsule wardrobe.

Evaluate your capsule wardrobe

Aim to wear the clothes in your capsule wardrobe for at least three months. After that, reassess your wardrobe and replace the clothes that you are not wearing. This ensures that your closet remains clutter-free.

A capsule wardrobe doesn’t have to be dull and boring. When adapting your capsule, follow this simple rule: one piece in, one piece out. Avoid impulse purchases that do not fit into your capsule. Explore some new outfits as fashion trends change, and gradually introduce new items or outfits into your wardrobe.
