Maid expectations: Onboarding your helper for a happy and productive stay
5-minute read
The right start goes a long way in helping your live-in maid settle in, understand the job scope and feel encouraged to work well. As an employer, you could draw on some HR tips that help motivate your staff. Here are some ways to create the right conditions for you, your family members and your helper to live and work together in harmony.
1. Welcome a new addition to your home
It’s all new to your new hire: your home, your estate, the shops and stalls, and transport links.
You might want to get a notebook for your helper. Like a company handbook, it can have guiding principles and expectations. You can write down notes for your helper, and she can add her own reminders along the way.
First steps
Introduce your home to her with a walkthrough: her own space, where things are kept. Tell her the general rules, such as no food in the bedrooms, lights off when not in use, and closing all windows when it rains. Introduce her to the members of your household, with a short description of their needs—for example, your elderly parent prefers quiet, so keep the noise level down.
Show not tell
It’s easier to absorb information when it’s shown, not told. For instance, go with her to the bus stop, market, and post office. Show her where to wait when picking up your son at school.
2. Set a daily routine
What time is it?
Draw up a timetable for preparing meals, vacuuming, mopping, and ironing.
Put the timetable up on the fridge door, so everyone is aware of her schedule. If Monday 10am is laundry time, then the items that need washing have to be in the laundry basket by then.
There are only so many hours in a day, so you have to decide what takes priority. If it’s most important for your elderly parent to exercise and socialise, accompanied by your helper, then there might be less time for house cleaning.
How to…
Modern life has many tools and gadgets that help us achieve tasks easily and quickly.
Get your helper up to speed with clear instructions. Those hefty instruction manuals might have too much information, so write down only what’s necessary. For example, switch on the main plug, pour one cup of detergent, and press the big button. You might want to supplement the machine instructions with reminders.
It’s important that you show her how things work, let her practise and show you what she’s learnt. Reinforcement will help her remember the instructions.
3. Communicate clearly
The language you use to communicate with her could be her second or even third language. So remember to slow down a little, and to speak clearly.
Check comprehension
Try not to give too many instructions at one go, as these might confuse her. An easy way is to ask her to repeat what you just said. And if you’ve shown her what she’s supposed to do, just ask her to demonstrate the same.
Give feedback, have regular reviews
Feedback is important. It lets her know if she is doing something right or not. When she makes mistakes or doesn’t match your expectations, stay calm and point out the areas for improvement.
You might share with her a list of the things she’s done well and things that need improvement. You can have a regular review with her, so she is aware of her progress.
As your helper settles in and carries out the tasks well, you can increase her responsibilities gradually.
After a good review, you can show your appreciation, perhaps with a small treat or an extra hour off, so that she is motivated to do well.
4. Motivate for better performance
If you provide a conducive environment where your employee feels protected and encouraged, she will likely be more productive.
Getting enough rest
Housework requires physical energy, and caring for a young child or a frail senior requires mental and emotional strength. Your maid will need proper rest to carry out her duties well.
On work days, a minimum 8 hours of uninterrupted rest would help her recharge for the next day’s tasks.Your live-in helper is entitled to one rest day per week. And she is entitled to one rest day a month that cannot be compensated away. Read the details here.
Personal development
Motivation can be in the form of helping your maid’s personal development.
You may want to check out the skills training and social support offered by Foreign Domestic Worker Association for Social Support and Training (FAST), a non-government organisation that focuses on enhancing the well-being of migrant domestic workers. FAST training programmes include job skills such as infant and elder care; and life skills such as learning to manage money, or improving English.
Here are more ideas on how your helper can have a useful rest day.
5. Enjoy peace of mind
Let your helper know early on that her health is important. The required six-monthly checkups ensure that she is not afflicted with any illness. Should she fall ill or require hospitalisation or surgery, she is covered by a medical insurance plan. As an employer, you can protect your helper with MSIG MaidPlus.
Our plan complies with the Ministry of Manpower’s (MOM) enhanced Medical Insurance requirements that came into effect on 1 July 2023:
- Annual claim limit of at least $60,000. The first $15,000 is paid by the insurer, after which, the employer pays 25% while 75% is paid by the insurer

It’s so hot! Shield yourself from skin cancer with these UV protection tips
5-minute read
The heat is on. The UV (ultraviolet) index in Singapore peaked on 28 March 2024 amidst record-high temperatures, meaning that the level of solar UV radiation on the earth's surface was extremely high.
Those who have grown up in sunny Singapore would be familiar with our country’s heat and humidity, which also means we may grow up taking sun protection lightly. But, being used to the hot climate doesn’t make us immune to its effects. In fact, we need to be extra careful in Singapore as we have consistently high levels of UV radiation all year round due to our location near the equator.
With hotter days still to come, due to the lingering effects of El Nino, Singapore residents need to start taking sun protection seriously before it’s too late. This article gives 3 simple ways people in Singapore can stay safe against these invisible threats.
Why hotter days are so dangerous
Hotter temperatures can result in a range of heat-related health issues, from mild ailments like headaches and rashes to more severe conditions like heat stroke. When it comes to the sun, most people think of the heat risks but often forget about the dangers of UV radiation.
UV radiation is a type of electromagnetic energy that originates from the sun and reaches the earth through its rays. Besides sunburn, overexposure to UV radiation can cause severe damage to the skin and eyes. Dermatologists warn that if not protected properly, it can even weaken the immune system.
There are two main types of harmful UV rays:
- UVA rays make up 95% of the rays reaching the ground. They have longer wavelengths but lower energy levels, damaging cells deeper into the skin indirectly but immediately. They are more widely associated with premature skin ageing. UVA rays can penetrate windows and clouds.
- UVB rays make up 5% of the rays reaching the ground. They have shorter wavelengths but stronger energy levels, damaging the outermost layers of the skin directly but gradually. They are more widely associated with most skin cancers. UVB rays can’t penetrate windows.

Skin cancer could happen to you
It’s a wide misconception that Asians, particularly those with darker skin, will not get skin cancer. News flash: Even a young person with no family history of cancer, but who carelessly spends large amounts of time in the sun, could develop the disease. In Singapore, skin cancer is the 6th and 7th most prevalent cancer in males and females, respectively.
Skin cancer can be categorised into two types:
- Melanoma skin cancer can develop anywhere on the body, in otherwise normal skin or in an existing mole that turns cancerous.
- Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC), the more common variation, slowly develops in the upper layers of the skin. Examples of NMSC are Basal Cell Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma.
Don’t leave things to chance. Skin cancer is highly preventable with discipline and prudence. Use these 3 simple ways to protect yourself from harmful UV rays and lower your risk of skin cancer:
1. Make sunscreen a must, rain or shine
2. Seek shade when the sun is brutal
3. Wear sun-protective clothing

1. Make sunscreen a must, rain or shine
Don't be fooled by clouds! UV radiation doesn’t just occur on hot days; levels can remain high even on cool, clear days with less cloud cover. Unlike UVB rays, UVA rays are not absorbed by the ozone layer. This means they can penetrate deep into the skin, regardless of the weather!
Applying sun protection to your skin needs to become part of your daily routine, especially if you’re going outside. Sun-protective skincare can come in two forms:
- Sunscreen chemically filters or screens the sun's UV rays, allowing some to pass through while blocking most of them.
- Sunblock physically sits on the skin and reflects the sun's rays away from the body.
Higher SPF (Sun Protection Factor) offers better protection against the harsher UVB radiation. The National Environment Agency recommends using a minimum of SPF 30 sunscreen for Singapore's UV index levels. To ensure your sunscreen provides the stated SPF, apply it generously to exposed skin and give it at least 15 minutes to take effect.
2. Seek shade when the sun is brutal
The weekly recommended dose of sunlight for good health is less than you think! Research shows that just 15-30 minutes of sun exposure, twice a week, is enough to help your skin produce Vitamin D.
That said, stay in the sun only if necessary. plan outdoor activities early in the morning or evening, avoiding 10am and 4pm. If you must be outside during those hours, stay in shaded areas under umbrellas; they’re not only useful for sudden downpours but also for unexpected sun exposure!

3. Wear sun-protective clothing
Exposed skin is most vulnerable to sun damage. Protect your skin from the sun by wearing loose-fitting, lightweight clothing made of tightly woven fabrics like linen or moisture-wicking synthetics. If you're going to be out in the sun for a while, consider wearing long sleeves, pants, and wide-brimmed hats.
For extra protection against UV rays, wear sun-protective clothing to shield yourself from UV rays. Many big brands such as Uniqlo, Lululemon and Decathlon now offer high-coverage breathable clothing with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor), similar to SPF for sunscreen, to prevent excessive sweating and heat from being trapped.
Lastly, make sure to wear your favourite pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. Regular and polarised sunglasses provide comparable UV protection, but the latter substantially reduces glare and reflections, ideal for drivers or beachgoers.
Get good cancer insurance while it’s hot
While sun protection is a crucial defence against skin cancer, it’s best to be ready for the unexpected; cancer treatment can incur significant medical expenses.
Take control of your health today with sun safety practices and secure your future with cancer insurance. MSIG CancerCare Plus helps to take the heat off when cancer strikes. Be guaranteed a payout of at least $50,000 for early or late diagnosis. Premiums are highly affordable, starting from less than 15 cents a day.

Fully Exercise Your Independence When Studying Abroad
This August, we celebrate Singapore's 59th year of independence. Our nation's remarkable journey from a small island to a global city-state reminds us that anything is possible. It inspires us to embark on our own journeys of self-discovery to develop our independence.
Independence is a cornerstone of personal development. It empowers us to make informed decisions, overcome challenges, and reach our full potential. Studying abroad allows us to step outside our comfort zone and become more independent through new experiences outside of Singapore.
However, worries about safety, health, and security in an unfamiliar place can hold us back from thoroughly enjoying new experiences.
This is when having good global study insurance makes a difference. Fortunately, our Global Study Insurance (GSI) provides comprehensive coverage in these four main areas, allowing you to fully embrace overseas adventures.
1. Health: Worried about high healthcare costs overseas?
Studying or travelling abroad may expose you to various healthcare systems and potential health risks. Whether it's food poisoning from exotic foods or a severe injury from an accident, having access to quality healthcare is crucial. Feeling unwell can impede your studies and prevent you from living your best life abroad.
MSIG GSI guarantees that you get the medical treatment you need when overseas, so you can return to your studies as soon as possible. If you become ill or injured, MSIG GSI will cover up to $50,000 for inpatient and outpatient medical, surgical, nursing, hospital, dental, traditional Chinese medicine treatments, and even post-hospitalisation transport. Additionally, emergency medical evacuation expenses up to $1,000,000 are also covered.
2. Safety: Wary of overseas adventure and potential dangers?
Imagine spending a weekend hiking in the mountains, sightseeing in a hot-air balloon, or parasailing at sea. While these thrilling experiences promise unforgettable memories, accidents can happen anywhere. They can ruin your adventure, make you afraid of pursuing such activities, and interrupt your studies.
Fear not. MSIG GSI’s $50,000 health coverage includes injuries from most adventurous activities. Additionally, in the unfortunate event of a terrorist attack or assault resulting in a felony, MSIG GSI offers medical financial assistance and counselling to help you get through the trauma.
3. Belongings: Afraid of losing your precious possessions?
Our personal belongings provide security, whether sentimental items like family trinkets from abroad or necessities like passports and laptops. However, losing or having these items stolen can disturb our lives and peace, always putting us on heightened alert. That’s no way to live.
Although MSIG GSI can’t retrieve lost or stolen valuables, feel at ease knowing you’ll be compensated monetarily for at least $300 per item. In fact, the cost of replacing your lost or stolen passport, travel tickets, and other relevant documents, as well as any reasonable extra travel expenses needed to replace these items, will be fully covered.
For thefts, make sure to file a police report within 24 hours of the incident so that your claims go smoothly—and to increase your chances of catching the perpetrator!
4. Studies: Anxious about potential disruptions to your global studies?
Pursuing an overseas education is a significant commitment. In addition to covering your medical needs to ensure that you can focus on your studies, MSIG GSI protects this financial investment by reimbursing unused tuition fees if you are hospitalised for more than 30 days.
What if something happens before your studies even begin, such as your sponsor's sudden death or permanent total disablement? No one wants this to happen. But if it does, find some solace in knowing that MSIG GSI will reimburse your unused tuition fees so that you can proceed with your education plans.
Be free to make the most of your overseas education with MSIG GSI
With MSIG GSI by your side, you can genuinely embrace the independence of studying abroad. Explore new cultures, make lifelong friends, and create unforgettable memories without the burden of financial worries. Your focus should be on personal growth and academic achievement, and MSIG GSI is here to support you every step of the way.
Don’t let concerns about safety, health, or finances hold you back from enjoying the full study abroad experience. Your overseas independence matters to us. MSIG has regular exclusive promotions on our insurance plans. Click here to view the latest deals. Policy terms and conditions apply.
MSIG simplifies the insurance buying process for SME clients through WhatsApp Chatbot developed with Embed Global
20 Aug 2024
MSIG Insurance has partnered with its intermediary, Embed Global, to simplify the purchasing journey for business insurance through the Whatsapp platform. This marks the general insurer’s second foray using a WhatsApp chatbot to automate insurance quotations, with the target market of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) this time round.1
The process of obtaining business insurance coverage is streamlined through a chatbot-led conversation. This intuitive experience significantly reduces the time required for SME clients who need to provide just some basic information to receive an instant quote. They can complete the transaction via a payment link provided by the chatbot and receive their e-policies by email.
The automation leverages Artificial Intelligence and an Application Programming Interface (API) to connect the chatbot to MSIG’s underwriting and rating model. This helps to facilitate the seamless quotation for SMEs to purchase SUMO, a business insurance package underwritten by MSIG.
This all-in-one policy provides coverage for property, liability, business interruption and employee-related risks, and offers the option for SMEs to further customise benefits to suit their needs.
Mack Eng, CEO of MSIG Singapore said, “The availability of appropriate insurance policy cover is important for business continuity and success of SMEs, which constitute 99% of businesses in Singapore. Lack of insurance protection or underinsurance can significantly hinder their growth with ripple effects impacting the economy. Through our collaboration with Embed Global, we aim to foster entrepreneurship by making insurance both accessible and affordable. This partnership ensures our SME clients have adequate financial protection to navigate risk events and recover swiftly.”
Dennis Ng, CEO of Embed Global added, “As a homegrown company, we are thrilled to collaborate with MSIG to enhance insurance accessibility for SMEs and support small business owners in their growth journey. MSIG is a reliable and trusted insurer with a proven history in business insurance. Their extensive knowledge and expertise align well with our mission to empower customers with simple, essential insurance.”
Kenny Yap, Senior Vice President, Corporate Distribution, MSIG Singapore said, “Technology and automation play a vital role in helping us build stronger relationships with SMEs. By expanding our distribution through new digital touchpoints like Whatsapp, it will streamline to make it easier and more efficient for SMEs to secure insurance to protect their assets and their employees. This initiative continues to underscore our commitment to serve the SME segment in innovative ways.”
SMEs who wish to be covered by MSIG’s business insurance package - SUMO, can access Embed Global's chatbot at +65 8915 4640 or https://embed.global/besafe.
